The Blytheville, Arkansas gun case history dates back to the early 1800s. At that time, this small town was located in the eastern section of Arkansas. The area now known as Blytheville was first settled by Americans in the late 18th century. The first permanent settler in what is now Blytheville was James Fenton, who arrived in 1799. By 1821, Fenton had a store and post office established in what is now downtown Blytheville. One of the earliest firearms cases ever brought to trial in Arkansas occurred in 1828 when one John Gentry attempted to purchase a rifle from Ebenezer Hays at an auction held at state capital Little Rock. Hays refused to sell him the rifle because it had been used previously by a person other than Gentry and he considered it too valuable for sale without testing it first. In 1829, another American named George Barnes purchased land south of present-day Blytheville from Daniel Boone for $1,000 ($102,000 today). Barnes developed this land into one of the largest cotton plantations in the region and began growing corn, hay and tobacco on his plantation. In 1830, Barnes sold some of his acreage north of present-day Blytheville to John Sibley for $3 each share (approximately $182 per acre). In 1840, Phebe Callender established herself as a midwife and physician in nearby civilization while living with her husband Joshua Callender on their farmstead just east of present-day downtown Blytheville. Joshua Callender later became governor of Arkansas during Reconstruction and is buried at Springdale Cemetery there. On February 20th 1865 (Fenruary 20th 1865 according to local historian Edna Waddell), twenty nine citizens of Clarksdale marched into town demanding that Mayor Clardy issue them arms so they could fight against Confederate forces invading our State from Tennessee. This event is also counted as the day that city limits were set at 15 blocks long instead of 6 miles wide which would have made Clarkesville much larger than it currently appears today due to its location within modern day Arkadelphia proper (which lies about 12 miles west of Clarksdale). After much discussion among all those involved about whether or not arming citizens would actually lead to any real protection versus Confederate forces roaming around town aimlessly searching for civilians without any useful purpose other than generating attention - Mayor Clardy issued orders ordering all male residents between 21 years old and 45 years old residing therein with permission from their parents or legal guardian(s) TO OWN A GUN AND TO ATTEND THE CIVIL LIBERTY ARMS EXHIBITION ON TUESDAY APRIL 3RD FROM 8 PM TO 12 AM AT THE CITY LIMITS OF 15 BLOCKS LONG! ALLOWED LESS THAN ONE HALF OF THE ADMITTEDResidents To Attend Without Gun Ownership! Gun Ownership Ended Up Being More Like It Used To Be... Citizens Were Now Required To Present Arms At Every Home And There Was little Or No Defensive Action Taken Against The Rebels!

The Blytheville, Arkansas community was founded in 1881 by the merger of two small towns - Carthage and Phelps. The town was named for General John A. Blythe, a Confederate general who fought in the American Civil War.
