Vance bought the Elmira Claims from a group of local prospectors and began to develop them into a silver mining operation. The company became known as Phelps Dodge and produced more than $3 million worth of silver for televisions, radios, autos, pharmaceutical products and other goods during its heyday. In 1978 it merged with American Silver Mining Corporation to form one of the largest silver companies in America. Today Phelps Dodge is headquartered in Tulsa, Oklahoma and owns properties throughout central and western Canada including near Monterrey, Mexico City and Laughlin Nevada).
