The Forrest City Knife Company was among the first knife companies to produce standard-sized folders for retail sale. In 1922 the company introduced the "Ferguson" knife which became popular throughout the United States. In 1949 the Forrest City Knife Company merged with H & R Block to form H&R Block/Forrest City Incorporated. The company continued to produce knives until it ceased production in 1997.

Forrest City was founded in 1868 by James Forrest and his family. The town was named for General Forrest, who had died in 1865. Forrest City became a small farming community with only 10 residents when it was founded. It grew rapidly after the discovery of oil in nearby Fort Smith, Arkansas, and by the early 1900s its population reached 20,000. In 1916 Forrest City became an incorporated municipality and began to enjoy some of the benefits that come with being a municipal government: more autonomy over spending decisions, for example, and less reliance on state funding. However, during World War I the city experienced a devastating famine due to lack of food supplies and adequate infrastructure. The war also caused widespread destruction throughout Arkansas - much of which Forrest City suffered as a result. In the 1920s growth resumed within Forrest City as new businesses were established and jobs were created in industry and agriculture. By 1930 Forest City had grown to over 30,000 residents while still enjoying certain advantages granted to municipals by state statute: more control over spending (including appropriations for public works), independent police force,and equal rights with other municipalities within the state’s boundaries. However, during the Great Depression many businesses closed their doors or went out of business; this led to increased crime rates in Forrest City and serious social problems. In 1938 Forest City passed an ordinance forbidding discrimination against any group based on race or national origin due to wartime injuries or economic disadvantage; however these measures did not help improve living conditions for all citizens because there remained significant disparities between races at home and abroad. Finally, following World War II most businesses closed down again as prices for goods brought about by post-war demand plummeted; this led to growing poverty among local residents which worsened following changes inArkansas economy that favored large corporations over small farmers & businessmen).
