Fort Smith was founded in 1836 as a military post on the Arkansas River by General James O. Bird, who served as Commandant of the Military District of Washington Territory. The fort was named for General Stephen A. Douglas, who had been killed in action at Fort Harrison in 1837. The fort was first built on an oxbow bend in the river, and it soon became a center for trade and commerce. In 1840, Fort Smith became the capital of what is now Arkansas. This action helped convince President Andrew Johnson that he needed more troops behind him rather than withdrawing them gradually back towards Richmond during his final months in office; Johnson ordered Mudge not only to continue siege operations at Fort Smith but also build additional defenses along portions of Highway 6 around present-day Little Rock (the “Arkansas Expedition”). The post saw little combat during World War I but experienced significant damage due to artillery fire from German aircraft bombing raids over Forts Worth and Wheeler during that conflict; however no casualties resulted until 1919 when both structures were destroyed by enemy shelling while still under construction (replacing another prewar structure which caught fire).
