The first scope mount was designed by Nicholas-Jacques Conte in 1794 for his French musketeer captain Nicolas-Jacques Colbert. Colbert wanted his Musketeer Regiment's rifles to be able to field-strip and reload quickly, so he needed something that would attach the barrels securely to the stock. He found that using an eyelet in each barrel didn't work well, so he invented the conical objective mount (COM). This system allowed the rifleman to adjust his sight easily while firing, and it helped improve accuracy because now he could use less elevation correction information since there was only one screw per objective. The next step was developed by Elisha Goodrich in 1849 when he patented his "Goodrich Elevation Model" turretscope. This system used two screws per objective instead of one, which made it more stable and easier to control your aiming point while shooting. It also allowed users to shoot at targets up close without having to worry about range adjustment. Goodrich's invention helped make Scope Mounting become more popular across America and Europe as shooters began using turrets for their firearms.
