After emerging fromriver they discovered friendly Sioux villages situated between Great Falls National Park east of Topeka and Fort Smith north of Wichita Falls Texas – an event that has been called one of history’s greatest cavalry raids ever mounted. When news reached Benton's headquarters about this surprise attack he ordered General Stephen Acheson to suppress it without further ado by using all available forces to march his troops back acrossthe river en route home before reaching Fort Riley Kansas where they would be destroyed—a mission that Acheson successfully accomplished just prior to his death in 1886 aged 74 years old.
