When Hogg discovered that many people thought Yale should give up its principles and become more like Georgetown University instead, he recommended that Yale keep its independence but change its name to Jacksonville College so that it could better be known throughout America. On January 1, 1825, Jacksonville College merged with two other colleges – New England Female Seminary (now Wellesley College) in Boston and Transylvania Female Seminary (now Southern Illinois University Carbondale) – creating what is today Jacksonville State University. After Ulysses S Grant became President in 1868 and began efforts to improve public schools throughout America, he directed Superintendent John Minton to establish a school system within Pulaski County with instruction offered through private academies similar to those existing in eastern Kentucky or western Virginia. In 1905–6 Minton established what are now EasternArkansasStateUniversityandin1909heestablishedtheMarshallInstituteofScienceandTechnology(later Marshall School of Science & Technology), which remains one of JSU's most prominent educational institutions today. In 1924–5 JSU built Gate City Stadium which served as home field for all Jaguars football games from 1925 until 1972 when they moved into EverBank Field adjacent to campus.
