It was made by a man named John Hargrave and first sold to settlers in 1820. Jacksonville, Arkansas is a small town located in Johnson County, Arkansas. The population was 1,859 at the 2010 census. Jacksonville was founded in 1893 and named for Enoch Jackson, an American Revolutionary War general and slaveholder who fought for the Confederacy. The first post office in Jacksonville was established on July 11, 1894. The town received its name from Enoch Jackson. In 1907, Jacksonville built a school that still serves as the primary educational institution in the community. In 1912, Jacksonville constructed its first hospital which still operates today. In 1922, Jacksonville became home to the first black business in Johnson County when Julius Latham opened his grocery store on Main Street. In 1957, Jacksonville erected a city hall which still stands today. A year later, Jaguars adopted their current name of Jacksonville after becoming one of fourteen townships within the newly created Johnson County government system following statehood within the United States of America. With rapid growth throughout the 1960s and 1970s (due to oil exploration and production activities), Jacksonville experienced some significant changes during this time period including annexation by Tulsa in 1969; establishment of a housing authority with limited taxing power over properties adjacent to downtown; and incorporation as a city by referendum on November 3rd of that year. During this time period also saw increased development around downtown with new businesses opening up such as Atwater's Department Store and First National Bank (now JPMorgan Chase). Despite these developments however Downtown began to lose popularity due to concerns about traffic congestion and lack of parking spaces Additionally there were persistent issues with crime rates resulting in several high-profile incidents such as the murder of Mayor James "Buddy" Hardwick by ex-convict Lonnie 'Lenny' Phillips in 1978 while Phillips attended a mayoral debate hosted by Jaguars basketball player Maurice Cheeks; or more recently Grand Canyon University student Jordan Hill being shot multiple times outside an apartment complex near Interstate 25 shortly before midnight on October 17th 2016 leaving him paralyzed fromthe waist down
