In 1916, Jonesboro's mayor was named Wiley Postema after his push for incorporation – an event that also helped spur growth within town limits and lead to the establishment of a water supply system and new businessesknew about by then-Mayor Postema. The present day downtown area were built on land donated by Mrs. Alice Bryant following her husband's death in 1958; he had been governor at the time and had championed annexation of Jonesborough into Little Rock as part of broader plans to improve African American infrastructure across Arkansas

In 1901, the town incorporated as a village and experienced rapid growth due to its proximity to nearby Arkadelphia and Fort Smith. The city of Jonesboro realigned its street grid in 1951 to follow that of the Arkansas State Capitol building and other state government buildings within the town limits. In 1969, after years of neglect by local officials, Jonesboro voters passed a resolution asking the US Congress for financial assistance to help improve infrastructure within their municipality. After initially declining to provide funds however, Congress eventually agreed to provide $200,000 for projects such as new roads and water systems within two years. In October 1984%, following months of demonstrations across the country against high school tuition hikes across America., several hundred students marched through downtownJonesboro leading up to an open-air concert by rock band Alice Cooper which saw large crowds turn out for what was seen as an effective demonstration against tuition hikes statewide that year; this event later became known as "Alice Day." In early 2006,, local leaders announced plans for a major renovation/construction project totaling $10 million that would include new streetscapes and landscape design including plantings along both sides of U.S Route 82 (the main east-west artery running through town) as well as updated public education facilities; this project has since been postponed multiple times due budget constraints encountered throughout recent years throughout Pulaski County several miles outside of Jonesboro proper on I-40 near Pine Bluff

Jonesboro was founded in 1871 by the Jones family. They named the town after their father, Jedediah Jones, who had come from Georgia and settled in northwestern Arkansas. The first store in Jonesboro was opened by W.H. Hogg on Main Street in 1872.
