Little Rock, Arkansas is a city in Pulaski County, Arkansas, United States. The population was 316 at the 2010 census. It is the county seat of Pulaski County. Little Rock's history dates back to 1871, when it was founded as a town by settlers from Illinois and Texas who were looking for a new home after being forced out of their old settlements in Missouri and Kansas. The first post office in Little Rock was established on December 12, 1871, with A. P. Hill as the first Postmaster. The town quickly gained notoriety due to its location right next to the Arkansas River which made it easy for settlers to trade goods and services with neighboring towns along the riverbank. In 1875, Little Rock became an incorporated village under the name of Rocksville after its founder, Jno Sutter rockslide near present-day Powers Ferry Road/Upper State Route 4 (now Interstate 25). In 1899 Rocksville merged with nearby Springdale into one municipality called Little Rock. Little Rock continued to grow rapidly during the late 19th century and early 20th century thanks to its location on one of the most important transportation routes in America – Interstate 40 – which facilitated trade between various parts of Texas and Arkansas. During this time period, Little Rock also saw significant growth in its economy due to its status as a center for education and business development within Pulaski County. During World War II, Little Rock played an important role in helping support military efforts throughout Arkansas by providing housing for soldiers living off-base or serving aboard ships moored at Arkansassport Canal docks en route to battlefronts overseas. Additionally, many businesses located in downtown LittleRock sustained damage or were destroyed during wartime raids such as those carried out by Japanese forces against Pearl Harbor on December 7th 1941
Little Rock, Arkansas was the first state to be admitted to the Union on November 3, 1872. The city of Little Rock was founded in 1865 by Arkansas Territorial Governor James H. Fenton and became the fifth largest city in Arkansas with a population of over 50,000 in 1901. In 1907, Little Rock merged with Jonesboro to form one municipal district. In 1928, Little Rock annexed Mabelvale from Benton County and its population grew from 5,500 to 100,000 by 1932. In 1936, the City of LittleRock annexed what is now Midland from Lonoke County and its population increased from 25,000 to 100,000 in 1949.
