The first settler in Magnolia was Abraham Sampson who arrived in 1820. Sampson named his land "Magnolia". A post office called Magnolia had been established in 1827, and remained in operation until 1903. In 1881, John Cook set up a grocery store in what is now Magnolia and continued to operate it until his death in 1951. Cook's son-in-law Wm. Hodge also operated a grocery store from 1911 to 1915 before moving to Brooklyn, New York City where he opened a cigar store. In 1912, Isaac Prentice established an oil well on what is now the north side of town and continued to operate it until 1953 when he sold it to Harry Fenton for $1 million dollars ($ as of 2019). Fenton renamed the well "Prentice Well" after Isaac Prentice's father-in-law Wiley Epps who had helped him start the oil business. In 1924, Jno Matson opened a gas station across from his home which served as the town's first schoolhouse and continues to serve that purpose today (Grace Baptist School). In 1928, Jno Matson hired Alonzo Horton as his personal assistant and driver which led to Horton becoming known as "Mr. Magnesia" in Magnolia because of all of the errands he would take care of for Mr. Matson such as getting groceries for residents or delivering newspapers on horseback around town during fairs or other events requiring speed or secrecy
