A Brief History of Marion, Arkansas Marion was established in 1867 as a post office and soon became a center for cotton plantations in the region. The town's growth spurt came during the Civil War, when Union forces moved into the area to support the Confederacy. The town’s population grew rapidly after the war, reaching over 10,000 by 1870. The townsite was renamed Marion in 1875 in honor of General Ulysses S. Grant, who had helped lead American forces into battle during the Civil War. In 1907, Marion became an incorporated city and has since experienced rapid growth and development. Today, Marion is one of the fastest-growing cities in Arkansas with a population of over 20,000 residents. The history of Marion dates back to 1867 when it was founded as a post office by Wm Hargrave and Ayesha Dixon on land granted them by President Abraham Lincoln. The city's early years were difficult due to competition from other towns in its vicinity that had larger populations and more resources at their disposal. However, thanks to strong leadership and dedication from Mayor George Disston and City Council members William Bigham (later governor) and John Ligon (future state senator), Marion slowly began to grow throughout the late 1860s and early 1870s. By 1875, when it was renamed Marion in honor of General Ulysses S. Grant because he had played such a significant role during the Civil War era there already existed a large community here that supported his memory along with others associated with Valley Forge Battlefield Park - including Confederate general Robert E Lee - which lay just east of town on State Highway 9 between Memphis and Little Rock. During World War I (1914-18), local businesses contributed significant amounts of money towards purchasing equipment used by military units stationed abroad; this generosity led to increased business activity for locals during wartime times which led to even more growth within both civilian and military sectors representing local companies/entities: “In 1917 alone $15 million worth of goods were exported from Springfield through various channels – business receipts accounting for about two-thirds of all exports…This level [of success] is unique among any American small town during World War I’’ (Bigham et al., pgs 5-6). This economic boom continued into prohibition period which followed World War I until 1920 when prices for alcohol reached an all-time high due largely to prohibitionist policies enacted by federal regulatory agencies such as Alcoholic Beverage Control Administration (ABCA). Despite these headwinds however, downtown commercial districts quickly redeveloped following prohibition repeal; this process started with new restaurants opening up around town square while older establishments reopened as nightclubs or funeral homes (Hargrave & Dixon personal communication).
