In 1850, George Cushing became the first settler in Pulaski County when he purchased land from the Chickasaw Nation near modern day Auburn, Alabama. He built a log cabin known as "Cushing's Cabin" on what is today corner of First Street and Fourth Avenue North near present-day Interstate 35W east of downtown Little Rock. A year later, Cushing marriedLouisa Hinton (born December 12, 1840). They had six children: Parmelia Hinton (Augusta Belle), George Creighton (1859-1934), Letha Amanda Hinton (January 20, 1861 - May 5, 1934), Viola Everett Cushing (October 6, 1865 - October 8th 1951),and Brigham Young Cushings (July 10th 1863 - May 15th 1938). In 1901 more than one thousand residents lived in five blocks along First Street between Eighth and Ninth Avenues North; this area would be known as "The Square." The Panic of 1907 caused a decrease in business activity which led to many businesses closing including Mr. Kapp's grocery store at Third and Market Streets North which closed its doors for the last time on July 2nd that year according tohistoryofarkansasonline . However , other stores such as Wm Sibley & Sons Hardware Store moved into new locations during that time period including Mrs Fenton’s beauty salon at Seventh Avenue South between Pryor Boulevard and Second Street East while also several residences were converted into apartments with various names such as Riverside Terrace or Hillcrest Drive.- In 1908 Gertrude Neumann erected her home “Belle Isle” across from Third Avenue Northeast just north of current day Northwest Highway Also Known As Park Place which still stands today looking out over Main Street East From There She set up her own nursery operation until her death on November 10th 1950 In 1947 Arkansas Statehood was granted to Pulaski County making it an official county seat but because there were not enough residents registered with the county clerk's office by January 1st 1948 all addresses within the then unincorporated community of Maumelle must have been filed with Pine Bluff because no real development took place until after that date . On February 14th 1948 about 50 people gathered outside courthouse steps for an open house regarding plans for annexation by Pine Bluff so much progress had been made since 1942 when annexation petitions were first submitted but no action was taken
