One group of soldiers discovered a creek named Tumbling Waters which they thought may be related to Custer's battle with Chief Joe during that year's Battle of Little Bighorn. A local farmer, John Fenton set up a water tap on this creek and soon became known as "Fenton's Fountain" because he provided potable water for all his neighbors in Price County. In 1894, when white men first started planting oilseed crops next door to the original David Wells store (now part of Walmart), they called their new crop "Maisie." This name stuck and has been used ever since as an official nickname for Maumelle by its citizens and some businesses within the community. This early history is reflected in other aspects of life such as transportation; residents still use wagons drawn by mules or donkeys rather than cars or buses today because it's more affordable and efficient that way! In 1837, Maumelle became the capital of Farmington County and continued to grow until it reached its peak in 1850 with a population of 6,000 people. After declining throughout the remainder of the 19th century, Maumelle briefly regained its former prominence as an agriculture center during World War II before falling into obscurity again following the war. However, since 2000 it has become an important cultural and economic center in northeast Arkansas.
