The town was incorporated on November 3, 1907. The first post office in Maumelle was established on December 12, 1907. The name "Maumelle" comes from French meaning "a meadow by the river." The name probably originated with early Indian traders who visited the area and named their camps after local places like Montcalm and La Pointe-aux-Pins in France. In 1881, James Gossey founded a whiskey distillery here which continued operations until 1927 when it closed due to Prohibition. In 1915, John Fenton erected a small frame store known as Fenton's General Store which became one of Maumelle's most popular tourist attractions for its gift shop, historical exhibits and its view of the Arkansas River from nearby Mount Carmel. In 1933 Maumelle became an all-white city when white residents moved into black neighborhoods around Little Rock following the integration of Arkansas' public schools systems. In 1951 Maumelle became home to both Little Rock High School and Arkansas State University; however, it lost its high school status in 1957 when ARKS merged with Central Arkansas Teachers College (now West Little Rock High School).
Maumelle was founded in 1871 by the Maumelle and Arkansas Railroad. The town was named for General Samuel J. Maumelle, a Union general who served in the American Civil War. The railroad opened up the area around present-day Maumelle to settlement, and the town quickly grew into a thriving community. The first settler in Maumelle was George Halsey, who arrived in 1872. By 1880, there were over 100 residents living inMaumelle. The town experienced some prosperity during its early years, but it ultimately fell victim to economic decline after World War I ended.
