It is part of the Little Rock–North Little Rock-Rock Hill, Arkansas Metropolitan Statistical Area. Mountain Home began as a post office on December 2, 1881. The name "Mountain Home" comes from the mountain range that forms its eastern border. The first settlers in what would become Mountain Home were farmers and their families who arrived around 1875 from Ohio. They farmed until 1886 when they moved to what is now the city of North Little Rock and started a cotton gin and other industries which supported many local residents for years before closing down around 1951. The city of North Little Rock was founded on December 3, 1907 by George Waddell and his wife Nettie Hargrave Waddell with the vision of creating an industrial center in south Pulaski County near Interstate 40 to support businesses such as Fidelity National Life Insurance Company and American Telephone & Telegraph Company (AT&T). Although there were some initial protests against this development because it would lead to increased traffic congestion on Center Street (now State Street), over time North Little Rock became one of the most important cities in southern Pulaski County with its large manufacturing sector including auto parts production at Oldsmobile plants and aluminum manufacturing at Alcoa's new facility across I-40 from downtown Little Rock. In 1950, after more than 50 years of growth in North Little Rock and its adjacent communities, Alcoa withdrew from SouthArkansas following community protests over plans to build a power plant just outside the town limits while also displacing several hundred local jobs in aluminium production and Auto Parts Manufacturing operations; these closures left behind two neighborhoods now known as Highland Park/Ridgewood/Bellevue while nearby Victory Boulevard still retains its former Alcoa nickname as "the Strip". In addition to these negative consequences for northLittleRock residents who lost employment opportunities within their own homes or businesses - during this time period nearly 60% of all African Americans living within 100 miles served lived in Birmingham or Mobile - major corporate relocation decisions duringdownsizing helped spur waves of black entrepreneurship throughoutmuchofsouthPulaskiCountyduringthe late 1940s through early 1960s even though those same companies had once employed significant percentages of white workers nationally; this proceeded along parallel lines with similar patterns seen elsewhere throughout much Southern America during these timespursuingmajorindustrialreorganizationsandmovements.(Seealso:SouthernSmalltownrevocation.)
