The first post office was established in 1882, and the first store opened in 1886. Farming became the mainstay of the economy until about 1920 when oil discoveries began making Russellville an important center for energy production. Russellville has experienced significant development over the years, including several waves of housing construction that transformed it into one of Little Rock's most popular neighborhoods.
