Russellville, Arkansas is a small town located in Pulaski County, Arkansas. The population was 1,898 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Little Rock-North Little Rock-Conway metropolitan area. Russellville was founded in 1881 by John Beal and named for General George B. Russell, who fought in the American Revolution. The first post office was established in 1889. In 1907, Russellville incorporation legislation gave it city status and its name change to Russellville then again to its current name in 1917. After World War I ended, many soldiers from nearby Fort Smith returned to live in Russellville while their families awaited word of their return home. A hospital was built on Railroad Street near what is now Lowndes Elementary School as a result of the war soldiers’ stay. The economic development of Russellville began with the opening of the Arkansas Highway 4th Avenue Bridge over the White River in 1922 which connectedRussellville with Pine Bluff and Fayetteville. This bridge allowed easy access to transportation within Pulaski County and beyond for those living in rural areas without roads or railways connecting them to larger towns or cities. The following year saw the construction of First Baptist Church which served as a meeting place for businesses and farmers until 1955 when it became an arena for local government meetings and other events until 1984 when it reopened as an arts center after being closed for several years due to renovations undertaken by neighboring Cities of Conway and Jonesboro which displaced most residents from their homes within what had been once one large village situated east of Interstate 25 between Interstate 30/Arkansas State Route 9 Business Loop (SR 9) eastward through downtown Jonesboro before terminating southbound at US Hwy 71 exit 435 about two miles west of present day Russelville along state route 3757 ( nowadays US 501). ranching has been a majorstayofthe town's economy since its founding; today there are more than twenty ranches operating withintown limits alone
Russellville was founded in 1853 by James Fenton and his wife, Nancy. The town was named for General Andrew Russell, an American general who served in the Mexican-American War. In 1881, the town passed to Turner County when it was created from Little Rock County.
