Russellville has a long and proud history as a center of optics, both commercial and scientific. The town was founded in 1881 by John H. Russell, who started the first optical store in the area. In 1907, Mayor Silliman donated land to the town for a public library and school district. The first high school opened in 1912. Today, Russellville is home to several museums including the Arkansas Museum of Natural History and Industry (AMNH), which houses one of the largest collections of natural history artifacts from around the world; and Arkansas Geological Survey's Regional Office (ROGERS) which provides research services for local government agencies in western Arkansas. The early days of optics were dominated by glass-making techniques, but soon it became clear that metal scopes could be used to better image objects at close range. By 1892, two companies had developed metal-coated telescopes with objectives designed specifically for observation at low magnification levels: American Optics Company (AOC) and RoyalOptical Works (ROW). AOC's new telescope known as "The Great Scattergun" was built in 1893 at ROW's facility on Bridgwater Drive near Russellville. This all-metal telescope featured an 8x50mm objective lens with a coated aluminum mirror that provided excellent resolution at close range while still allowing viewing at high magnification levels up to 10x or 20x depending on its use. Other companies quickly followed suit with similar scopes incorporating metal coatings/lenses into their designs. By 1899, all major manufacturers had introduced scopes utilizing metals as optics technology progressed further along its development path! These advancements not only allowed greater detail within images but also made them much more waterproof and fog resistant than traditional glass instruments! In 1904, ROGERS began providing research services for local governments in western Arkansas through its Regional Office located in Russellville. At this time, ROGERS played an essential role in developing many modern technologies such as digital photo printing technology which is now used throughout America!!
