The Sherwood Volunteer Fire Department and the Sherwood School District are two of the many organizations found in this small town. The first people to arrive in what is now Sherwood were itinerant farmers who set up camp along a creek near present-day Willowbrook on January 14, 1819. They called their new community "Hollow Grove." In 1840, James Hinton purchased some land east of Hollow Grove and built a cabin there which he named "Hinton's Landing." In 1847, David Ladd bought some more land from Hinton and founded another community called "Laddville" about north of Hollow Grove. One account says that Laddville had six log cabins with hand ovens for baking goods and 100 head of cattle. A second account says that Laddville had 20 log cabins with hand ovens for baking goods and 150 head of cattle. Soon after, other settlers arrived including John Cook who settled around present day White Sands Lake (northwest of today’s Sherwood). Cook started an implement factory in what is now known as Little Rock and exported his products to all over the country. Later arrivals included Isaacus Copley who settled aroundpresent day Bryant Lake (southwest of today’s Sherwood). Copley opened a general store in 1858 which became one of the most important businesses in downtown Little Rock during its early years. In 1862 Colonel Nathaniel Purdy established military headquarters on the southwest corner lot at Ninth Street and Independence Avenue in what is now known as North Little Rock. Purdy's Headquarters later became known as Fort Robinson Army Base before being renamed Fort Sheridan Army Base after World War II when it was moved to San Angelo, Texas due to increased hostilities within Arkansas concerning Japan's annexation of Manchuria! The first post office was established at Hollow Grove on October 15th 1865 by orderof Major General Wm Tatum USArmy commander commanding all troops south OF Arkansas!. The name 'Sherwood' was chosen because it had been used by several pioneer families during early settlement days: Smith & Elder (1819), Hinton (1840), Parkes & Gee (1848), Laddville (1847) . . . until finally it was given to David Laddville by Maj Gen Wm Tatum himself!
