Sherwood is a small town in Pulaski County, Arkansas, United States. The population was 919 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Little Rock–North Little Rock–Bentonville Metropolitan Statistical Area. The Sherwood post office was established in 1881, and served until it was discontinued in 1934. One of the early settlers in Sherwood was James Pritchard, who arrived there with his family from England in 1866. He built a log cabin on what is now Main Street and started a tannery to provide leather for shoes and other items. In 1876, he married Sarah Ellington and moved to what is now North High School building (now known as Building 4). They had four children: Bessie M., James H., Walter G., and Florence A.. A Presbyterian church was organized in 1881 by Rev. John Waddell with membership restricted to men over 25 years of age only; however, by 1888 it had grown to include women as members. Reverend Waddell resigned after serving two terms because of health concerns but continued to preach at the church until his death in 1893. Ministerial classes were offered for women beginning in 1889 under teacher Mrs. Cate Atchison; however, due to high tuition rates they disbanded after one year without any instruction being given from the pastor or board of directors about how best to operate the school-housearlievely Due largely to lack of funds raised through local sales taxes which were levied on property within 2 miles (3 km) of Sherwood limits-the school closed its doors for good on May 20th 1897! In 1898 an increase in population led Rev JWaddlell (new minister)to re-open School House & Ladies Auxiliary Chapel which functioned as Normal School during 98% Of Year despite lack Of Teachers so Female students sat In Bushes & Parked Near By while Men Chaired Classes “On Campus”

Sherwood is a small town in Pulaski County, Arkansas, United States. The population was 1,813 at the 2010 census. It is the home of Southern Arkansas University and the Sherwood Arts District. The town was founded in 1893 by Judge George Wirt and his wife, Anna Hargrave Wirt. Judge Wirt had come from nearby Pine Bluff to live in this area after purchasing a 50-acre tract of land from General John Wilson. The first post office in Sherwood was established in 1895. The name of the town came from a grove of chestnuts that stood near the original courthouse building. In 1907, Joe McNutt opened a general store in Sherwood and soon became an important factor in its development as a center for commerce and education. Joe McNutt's son, Clyde C., served as mayor from 1959 to 1961 and 1970 to 1974; he also was twice runner-up for governor of Arkansas (1972 and 1975). In 1990, Clyde C.'s daughter Betsy McNutt became Mayor Pro Tem of Pulaski County when her father died suddenly while serving as mayor pro tem. From 1990 until herken's election as Mayor on November 3rd 2003 she served as acting Mayor until Shelly Duren took over on that date due to term limits.. In October 2007, Southern Arkansas University announced it would be moving out of their current location on State Highway 339 into what will become the new main campus for the university located just east of town off US Highway 16 & FM 762 off SH 337 southbound between Bishopsville Rd./FM 1792 & SH 341 northbound concurrent with SAWR Campus expansion project which will include Student Union/Dining Halls/Library/. Sherwood is located at 38°14′01″N 92°27′37″W with an elevation of 449 feet (148 meters). According to the Köppen Climate Classification system, Sherwood has a humid subtropical climate or "Cfa".
The town of Sherwood was incorporated in 1871 and named after the tree-lined streets that lined its downtown. The town became a bustling center for business and education, with a population of over 1,000 people by 1912. In 1955, the town was renamed to honor General Ulysses S. Grant and the assistance he gave to Arkansas during the American Civil War.
