Sherwood is a small town in Pulaski County, Arkansas, United States. The population was 594 at the 2000 census. It is part of the Little Rock–North Little Rock–Conway incorporated area. The first white settlers in Sherwood were James and Eliza Hinton who arrived in 1827. They built a cabin on a hill overlooking the town. In 1828, they founded the First Baptist Church which still stands today. In 1830, Isaac Hinton settled in what is now Sherwood with his family. He operated a tannery and served as sheriff from 1834 to 1840. After he died, his widow married David Pemberton and they continued to live in Sherwood until their death in 1849. In 1865, Amasa Pemberton moved to Sherwood with his family and started an agricultural college called Arkansas State Normal School which still exists today as Washington University East Campus (WUE). He also purchased land for a school about two miles east of the town and built it into what is now known as Amasa Pemberton Park. After Amasa Pemberton's death, his wife Nettie took over operation of the college until her death in 1926; after that she sold it to Washington University in St Louis where it continues to be operated today as WU East Campus. gained notoriety during World War II when many Arkansans volunteered for service but few received proper training or returned home safely because of lack of food rations2
