A post office called Shorterville was established in 1892, and remained in operation until 1959. The town got its present name from General James Forrest Sherman who donated land for a school in 1902. In 1923, the United States Postal Service changed the name to Sherwood because it felt that this would be more distinctive than any other towns within Pulaski County that had similar names. As of 2010, there are only six businesses with surnames beginning with SH: Henschel's Hardware (now Lowe's), Jepson Seed & Supply (now Kroger), Poultry Unlimited (now Tyson Foods), Sheridan Farms Market (now Amazon Marketplace) and Steele-Bennett’s Furniture & Appliances chain store (now Sears). In addition to their namesake businesses, Shorterville residents also operate three churches: First Baptist Church, Second Baptist Church and Methodist Episcopal Zion Church; one convenience store; two gasoline stations; one restaurant; one agricultural Implement dealership; one pawn shop; four libraries including two public library systems as well as several private libraries throughout Pulaski County These organizations maintain village status while providing services such as police officers and firemen as well as social welfare programs like food stamps and free health screenings for children under eighteen years old
