Van Buren is a town in Pulaski County, Arkansas, United States. The population was 1,924 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Little Rock–Jacksonville, AR-MO Metropolitan Statistical Area. The first permanent settler in Van Buren was James Clements who arrived in 1827. The town was laid out by James and his brother Will on November 3, 1830. In 1836, Jeptha Bowen platted what became Van Buren and named it for President John Quincy Adams. In 1851, Colonel Nathaniel Purdy founded the Post Office here which served until 1865 when the Territorial Government moved its office to Little Rock. The first school in Van Buren was built on Main Street in 1853 by subscription and functioned as a district school until 1863 when it became an academy under the direction of Dr. William Ballard and Dr. George Washington Goodwin Jr.. In 1865, General Ethan Allen Milburn established military headquarters here after he won the War of1812 as Commander-in-Chief of all Arkansas forces from Missouri through Louisiana into Texas Territory

Van Buren was a small town in northwest Arkansas, located on the Arkansas River. The original town was founded in 1849 by John Van Buren and his brothers, Isaac and Nicholas. It grew rapidly due to its location on the river and its easy access to goods and services. By 1870, Van Buren had a school, Methodist Church, Baptist Chapel, blacksmith shop, hotel/motel and two stores. In 1874, the town approved annexation by Fayetteville; however, this did not happen until 1907. The townsite of Van Buren was surveyed in 1840 by James Ketchum; it is possibly named for him because he donated land for the town site. The first buildings were built around1850-1851 when the post office opened in that year. The first store was built on what is now Main Street in 1850. A second store was built east of present-day High Street in 1858-59. In 1865, Confederate soldiers burned down the courthouse while fleeing from Union forces retreating from Vicksburg following the Battle of Gettysburg. This event caused great consternation among local residents who had support for the Confederacy throughout the war; many believed that slavery should have been preserved rather than abolished. This event also led to increased trade between Van Buren and Fayetteville due to fears that Confederate goods would be confiscated if caught up in customs proceedings
The Van Buren region in Arkansas was settled by Dutch families during the early 18th century. The first known settler, Pieter van Buren, arrived in 1765 and homesteaded land near what is now Van Buren. In 1775, he married Martha Wayland; the couple had three children. From the time of his arrival until after the American Revolution, Pieter van Buren served as a captain in the militia and participated in many battles against Native Americans. He also worked on developing his landowning interests. In 1798, Abraham Lincoln was elected to succeed George Washington as President of the United States; van Buren became one of his chief political advisers. After Lincoln's inauguration, he traveled to Van Buren to meet with him and offer congratulations on becoming America's new leader. In 1800, Abraham Lincoln appointed Pieter van Buren as one of four commissioners responsible for organizing Missouri Territory into a state within the Union. This important task led to much friction between VanBuren and other Commissioners; ultimately it was accomplished without any conflict but it marked a turning point in their personal relationship. In 1807-1810, van Buren served as Secretary of War under Andrew Jackson; during that time he developed strong relationships with both Jackson and Ulysses S Grant (the future president). In 1824-1825 he served as Mayor of Memphis before being elected Governor of Arkansas in 1830. He retired from public life after serving only two terms due to age and health problems caused by an enlarged prostate gland
