Van Buren was founded in 1836 by Andrew Jackson Van Buren and his wife Eliza Keyes. The first post office was established in 1837. The community of Van Buren grew up around a blacksmith shop and general store operated by locals John Fenton and James Covington before they sold their business to nearby Little Rock in 1868. That same year, Van Buren's first school, which taught grades one through twelve, opened its doors to students from surrounding communities including Pine Bluff, Bradleyville, Clarksville, Arkadelphia and Fort Smith. In 1870-71 when the Union Pacific Railroad arrived in the area (it would later become known as Little Rock), Vancleave residents built a depot on the east side of the river for passengers waiting to travel northward along what became known as the "Pulaski Road." In 1901-02 when Arkansas statehood came about following Reconstruction following the American Civil War, Van Buren's citizens voted to incorporate as a town under then-Senator James K. Polk's bill – with only five other towns within Pulaski County doing so at that time; all but two were located outside of Little Rock now included within its borders. A new courthouse was erected soon afterward and by 1907 had reached its pinnacle with three floors comprising an courtroom/auditorium/library/theater complex on Main Street between Jefferson Avenue and Enterprise Street; also on site was a Methodist Episcopal church dating back to 1872 which served as both civic center and religious services building until it burned down in 1959 coincidentally just days after incumbent Democrat James Fayette lost his bid for re-election against future Governor Orval Faubus II In 1912-13 when World War I began somewhat prophetically due to America's entry into it via President Wilson’s “Allies Preservation Act” –[1] much media attention centred aroundVanBuren due largely because then Ulysses S Grant had been inaugurated president just six months earlier – local businesses contributed financially towards supplying food rations for troops stationed nearby at Camp Robinson; also that year saw construction commence on what would become known as White House Square adjacent to present day Old Town Hall Building which housed both courtrooms/offices/exhibit hall until 1966 when it too caught fire resulting in extensively damage VanBurens post office reopened officially on October 12th 1915 renamed from First National Bank after Senator John Bingham who chaired Senate Foreign Relations Committee during WWI Vancleave continued experiencing growth throughout WWII with various industrial plants being erected here such as Goodyear Tire & Rubber Company,[2][3] Phelps Dodge Corporation,[4] Sunbeam Shoe [5], ARCO Petroleum Company[6],[7],[8],[9][10], finally Atomic Energy Commission Offices relocated here beginning production at Oak Ridge National Laboratory starting work on plutonium conversion plant No 2 (later renamed Hanford Site) in 1945 . Today there are only 15 permanent residents living inside Vancleave limits while numerous visitors annually descend upon this historic community during summertime enjoying everything from arts festivals (such as Arkansas Arts Festival) through shopping opportunities available at local stores like Grifols Marketplace or JCPenney while keeping things simple by staying away during winter months .
