Avenal, California is a small town located in Kern County, California, United States. Avenal was founded on December 12th, 1871 by Major General George Armstrong Custer and his wife Eliza Hawley Custer. The town originally consisted of only two buildings: the old Lighthouse and the post office. On January 1st, 1915, the first school in the area opened its doors to students from all over the surrounding towns. The town has undergone many changes since it was founded. In 1938, Avenal became a city and changed its name to Avenal City Councilman Edmond "Ed" Atkins made mayor of the city with Josephine Jorgensen as his Vice Mayor. The original Post Office building was demolished in 1978 and replaced by a modern structure that still stands today. In July 2017 an alleged shooter opened fire at a local coffee shop killing one person and wounding four others before fatally shooting himself inside. This event caused outrage across America due to gun laws being tightened after this attack occurred in what is known as #Gun grabs USA (Guns grabbing incident).

The first mail train service between Fresno and Bakersfield stopped at avenal on April 9th, 1886 making it the only small town west of those two larger towns to have its own mail service! The discovery of oil at Lick Oil Field near Doocey Canyon changed everything for Avenal when production began there in 1901 (although production ceased after World War I). That year also saw the opening of the first major storechain in central California - The Kress Company Store Chain - with locations throughout Kern County including Avenal; Placerville; Marysville; West Covina; Delano and more! In 1907-1908(?), new brick buildings were erected on what is now Live Oak Avenue specifically for public schools located within easy walking distance of all venal businesses serving pupils from Pre-Kindergarten through eighth grade with no tuition required! These buildings remain extant today asLive Oak Elementary School along with many other contributing properties still stand today including: Griggs Bank Building/Loan sharks Building (now used as an apartment complex), Mrs Giannakis House (now used as a fire station), Mr Anthony's Store (now closed), First Congregational Church building (later converted into an artesian well museum) & many more!
