Avenal, California is a small town located in the Inland Empire of Southern California. Avenal has been inhabited by Native Americans since before European settlement. The first Europeans to come to the area were Spanish traders and missionaries in the mid-19th century, who founded Mission San Gabriel Arcángel on the north side of Avenal Creek. The name “Avenal” was given to the creek by Father José de la Peña y Pavón, who named it for Fernando de Alvarado, Governor of New Spain at that time. The mission was completed in 1821 and served as a religious center for many years. It then fell into disrepair and was abandoned in 1851. However, because Avenal had a key role in Mexican land grants made to ranchers during Rancho Californios (the Mexican land grant system), it became one of the most important towns in southern California. The post office began operating in Avenal on July 1, 1853. In 1860, Abraham Lincoln visited Santa Clara County while campaigning for reelection as president and saw an opportunity to make an address at Mission Santa Cruz de Alcántara near Pasadena. As he left Santa Cruz he passed through Avenal on his way back to Los Angeles; according to one account he remarked that there seemed “a very small place but full of good people” (Fitzgerald). Lincoln later called upon Mayor Antonio Lopez y Quintero of Santa Clara County when visiting San Francisco and said: “I noticed your fine courthouse there – I think it should be enlarged – its walls are too thin…It would be a great help if you could get someone from your city [Avenal] to design such a building – perhaps you can have him do it?” After mayor Lopez y Quintero declined Lincoln's request he sent Philadelphia architect John Witherspoon to study the situation and recommended construction begin immediately (Lopez Jr.). Construction started soon after and finished two years later under captain James Shieldss (1862) with cost estimates reaching $20,000 ($ million today). At this point Avenal had become one of the most prosperous towns in southern California due largely to its location within easy reach of major league baseball teams as well as resources like timber, water supplies, grazing land, gold mines and other businesses brought over by settlers looking for new opportunities after their country caught up with America during the Civil War (Gonzalez).
