The Azusa shooting of 17 students and educators on December 14, 2018 was a school shooting in the United States that took place at Santa Fe High School in Azusa, California. The shooter, 19-year-old Nikolas Cruz, killed 15 people and injured more than 20 before committing suicide. The gunman's motive is still unknown. Azusa, California (1879-1936) was a small town in San Joaquin County, California. It was located about sixty miles south of Sacramento and seventy miles north of Fresno. The population in 1910 was 1,584 people. The Azusa post office operated from 1881 to 1936. The town's first settler was William Teller and his family who arrived on horseback in 1879. A mill built by Teller in the early 1800s started operating here and produced flour, watermelons, cottonseed oil, eggs and other products for local farmers. In 1902 the Azusa Branch Railroad was completed which connected the town with Fresno and points east. This railroad played an important role in creating a community that could support itself as well as providing access to markets in eastern San Joaquin County. In 1916 when Azusa became part of the new city of Fresno it lost its importance as a community but regained some importance when it became home to the University of Californias Agricultural Experiment Station (USDA). USDA research here affected agriculture throughout northern California and southern Nevada until World War II when most of the research stopped due to wartime restrictions on travel and communication.
