In 1910, the county seat for Kern County moved from Brawley to Tulare and the population of Brawley declined to about 50 people by 1920. By 1940, only 10 people lived in the town and it had lost all its economic significance because of World War II when much of southern California was destroyed by fire. However, due to a resurgence inPopulation growth around 2010-2015, Brawley has regained most or all its former commercial importance as well as some new development including a hospital and an elementary school that opened in 2015.
