The city is bordered by Santa Monica to the south and east, West Hollywood to the north and west, and Echo Park to the northwest. It has a combined land area of 68 square miles (171 km2). The first Europeans to visit what is now Burbank were Spanish missionaries in 1795. In 1821, Captain John C. Fremont discovered gold at the Sinkhole Comstock Lode in what is now suburban Downey. After several years of exploration and prospecting, no gold was found but some silver was discovered at Monterrey Spring in 1839 by Antonio Canizares. In 1861, General Tom Bradley founded Camp Sherman on Menlo Park Boulevard just south of downtown along with other American troops during the Mexican-American War under orders from President Abraham Lincoln. The military camp became known as Bradley Heights after General Tom Bradley’s grave today on Monument Avenue near City Hall Plaza. On October 15th 1865 another American soldier named Don Carlos Berra arrived from San Francisco with news that gold had been found at Mono Lake about twenty miles (32 km) north of central Los Angeles: this event led to America’s first open-air mining campaign outside of Mexico City which resulted in 10 million dollars worth of treasure being recovered over six months starting February 6th 1865 including $5 per tonne found at Sutter’s MillMarch 25th 1865 In 1870 Burbank obtained its charter as an incorporated town from los angeles county officials……………………………………………………………..

It is the second most populous city in Los Angeles County and the largest city within Greater Los Angeles. The City of Burbank was founded on July 15, 1922 by John Sutter and his partners from the Gold Rush days as a land grant from then-Governor Hiram Johnson to George Eastman for his new motion picture production company. The first permanent settler in what would become Burbank was Isaac Asimov who arrived in 1881 with his family from Russia. He farmed near what is now North Hollywood until 1885 when he sold land to James Hutton for $5,000 ($100,000 Today). Hutton built an agricultural center which became known as "Hutton's Hope". Emerson also purchased property north of Burbank which would later become Westwood Village and Sherman Oaks. In 1925 Japheth LeRoy deposited $10 million (now worth over US$1 billion) with Jay Gould for development of Gilmore Girls Boulevard in Beverly Hills – originally called Hollywood Boulevard – which would eventually become one of LA's most famous streets. Gould also opened up some acres adjacent to Universal Studios for commercial use beginning in 1928; this area now forms part of Universal Park downtown. In 1927 Harry Cohn founded Columbia Pictures Industries with his brother Louis B Mayer along with independent producer/director Bela Lugosi followed suit two years later when they bought out Cohn’s share in Columbia Pictures merging their businesses under the new name Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer (MGM). MGM quickly became one of Hollywood’s largest producers and distributors while other studios were leased or acquired by MGM during this time including Paramount Pictures (1927), United Artists (1928), Warner Bros.(1929), and 20th Century Fox(1930). As movie industry giant Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer expanded into sound films with its own sound studio MCA Victor ((now Sony Entertainment Studios)), Burbank started to lose its status as a movie town due to suburban growth around it. However, local boosters led by banker Sam Spiegel managed to turn things around by creating a system where tax breaks were given based on industrial development rather than just film production that increased burbans' desirability as social capital for business ventures outside of film production areas; this policy continued until 1978 when Spiegel retired from banking but left open the possibility that more benefits could be given should future development within the cityscape results in increased employment opportunities within its borders outside film productions only if it meets certain environmental standards such as reducing pollution levels) .
