The first settlement was on the now defunct Rancho San Joaquin, later renamed the Rancho Santa Fe. The area that is now Burlingame was part of what is now Contra Costa County. In 1881, Captain Sutter and his men founded the town of Ferneyhough in order to trade with the surrounding villages. The town slowly developed into a small community with a few homes and businesses. In 1924, when Contra Costa County was created, Ferneyhough became part of it. The population of Burlingame increased rapidly during World War II due to the war effort and the influx of soldiers and their families. Between 1945 and 1951, Burlingame's population grew by over 100%. As Burlingame became more popular, many people started to move out of Ferneyhough into the newer neighborhoods within town limits. By 1961, only a few homes remained in Ferneyhough while most of the businesses had closed down or been moved to other locations within town limits. In 1972, after years of planning and discussion among various community groups, Burlingame's first shopping mall opened up at nearby Menlo Park. This marked an important milestone for Burlingame as it helped increase its popularity as a destination for residents and tourists alike. Today, despite some challenges (such as high housing prices),Burlingame has become one of Silicon Valley's most popular tourist destinations thanks to its unique history and culture
