In 1875, John Dennison built a sawmill on the banks of the Arroyo River near what is now known as Dennison Park. This mill produced lumber for buildings in Burlingame. The first store built at this location was called the “Dennison Store” and it operated from 1875 to 1886. In 1887, J W McConnell opened a grocery at First Avenue and Second Street which became known as McConnell’s Grocery after him. In 1895, Wm Houlahan opened a hardware store at First Avenue and Third Street which became known as Houlahan’s Hardware Store after him. In 1905, Captain Charles Smedley founded Smedley Engineering Company with his brother-in-law P C Glover to build armored cars for the US military during World War I. The company continued until 1947 when it merged into Ford Motor Company . In 1926, Harry Elmer Barnes opened an ice cream parlor on North Fourth Street in Burlingame that is still open today.. In 1934, Jack Schaefer opened his own barbeque restaurant called Schaefer's Barbecue Place which is still open today..

In 1888, the City set up a board of directors including Captains Hennepin and Burrillingame with responsibility for development and finance; street lighting; trash collection; water supply; parks and recreation; schools (four public schools at Fourth Street and Mission Avenue); fire protection; public health and sanitation services. A year later, it opened its first store which became known as "The Grapes" because it sold grapes from a small vineyards near town center. There were also two breweries - one within walking distance from the city limits (the Pacific Brewery) while another brewery (the Japanese Brewing Company) located just outside town limits but served only local residents until 1915 when both breweries closed down due to prohibition in America).
