The original town center developed around a small mill which still stands today (now known as Old Mill Park). development resumed when water became available for irrigation following the 1906 San Francisco earthquake which destroyed much of downtown San Francisco including most of the mills along Castro Street. A new bridge over Napa River was built northwest of town while other major infrastructure projects were undertaken such as an expressway linking SF with Sacramento and then into northern California; these projects increased commuting and also stimulated heavy industry which helped create Burlingame's current commercial district with its large factories dating back to World War II. Today's downtown area contains three blocks long centered around First Street between Castro Street and Highway 1A (the old alignment) with numerous restaurants, cafes, stores and office buildings overlooking Sausalito Creek
