In 1887 it was proposed to name a new town after Thomas Edison because he had made such an important contribution to American industry; however, this proposal was not accepted by the townsfolk. They voted instead to name their new town "Edison", after John Ambrose Edison who had helped found Westinghouse Electric Company in 1892. In 1912, fire destroyed much of downtown including Edisons' office building which still stands today at 5th Street and Western Avenue; however, Edison rebuilt his business at 1201 N Broadway (now Fairbanks Ave) which still stands today as one of downtowns most iconic buildings. The original town incorporation charter granted by Los Angeles County stated: "No person or corporation shall erect any structure within this limits except for public use." This prohibition against commercial growth led to some tension between residents and developers over property rights during the early years of Calabasas' development; but eventually these disputes faded away as businesses grew more diversified and services became available from outside the community center at 5th Street & Western Avenue. During World War II, many local soldiers were drafted into service in nearby Camp Foster on White Sands Missile Range near Socorro; as a result, many businesses closed down due to wartime shortages of employees unable to continue operating under difficult military conditions. However, soon afterwards most businesses reopened thanks to continued population growth inCalabAS (and other nearby cities). However even with postwar growth, housing prices remain unusually high for Southern California given its relatively low population density - currently they are only half those seen adjacent Las Vegas or Phoenix although they will likely increase somewhat with future developments around Interstate 10 connecting both sides of central LASA

In 1853 Rancho Loma de las Palmas was given to Luis Muñoz Jr.. In 1881 Mexican land grants were issued which included parts of present day Calabasas and adjacent areas lying between Ventura Boulevard and Interstate 5 known as Rancho Mirage. The city's boundaries changed numerous times throughout its history – most notably when it joined Los Angeles County on January 1, 1923 – but its core remained unchanged until 1990 when it became part of the newly created Metropolitan Statistical Area (MSA) for Los Angeles County.
