Calexico is a small town located in Imperial County, California, United States. The population was 7,191 at the 2010 census. Calexico is east of Bakersfield and north of Fresno. It is bordered by the towns of Niles to the south and east and Porterville to the west. The name "Calexico" comes from Two Rivers Canyon which flows through the town. The canyon ran due south from there to join up with the Coachella River near present-day downtown Calexico. A later version of the name had it spelled "Calecito". The first post office in Calexico was established on October 27, 1872, with Elisha Semon as its first clerk. At that time it was known as San Bernardino de la Paloma Creek Valley. A second post office called Black Mesa was established in 1875 but discontinued operation because of roofing problems on its building. In 1876 David Waddell started raising cotton for processing in what would become Waddell Field today's Abbottabad Shopping Center on land he had bought from José Joaquín Murillo y Rubio about two miles northeast of downtown Calexico on December 6, 1865; Murillo returned this gift three years later when he ceded part of his Rancho Los Alamos del Norte including Abbottabad to Waddell under a treaty ratified January 14, 1870 between Mexico and Great Britain (the so-called Treaty of Abbotabad). In 1912 Waddell married Lola Alvarado who also lived in Abbottabad until her death there in 1951; they are buried at Arlington National Cemetery together with their spouses Susana Dominguez and Ramon Chávez Hidalgo among others After World War II most residents left for various reasons: ranch hands were sent off to work cattle ranches throughout southern California; white flight began following organized UFW violence against Mexican peonage camps beginning around 1942 while American military forces held sway over much of northwestern Mexico; after 1955 many people moved into new housing developments such as Springbrook Village developed by architects Edwin Reed and Julius Shriver adjacent to Interstate 5 ; or they chose relocation opportunities available within newly opened central valley communities such as Victorville or Placerville although still affected by tensions along UAW/AFSC lines over jobs and benefits points within these valleys . That migration stopped abruptly around 1970 when federal deportation laws changed resulting in an increased number of aliens living outside America without papers while Central Valley resident residency requirements changed gradually becoming more relaxed culminating with full nonresident Alien status being granted only upon completion of certain conditions including paying taxes annually (now required only for those under 30 years old) , having no criminal record , owning property assessed at $1 million or more

Calexico is a small town in Baja California, Mexico. It was founded by Mexican American pioneers in 1857 as Rancho Calexico de las Pulgas (later renamed Calexico). The name "Calexico" means “calm and serene” in the local language. The town has been continuously inhabited since the 1840s, when Americans arrived to rancho land that now includes much of the eastern part of Baja California. The first post office at Calexico was established on February 14, 1857, and became operational on October 1, 1857. In 1862, the United States sent an exploratory team led by Don Alberto Rivera to explore the new land west of San Diego which included parts of what is now Baja California. They named this area Nuevo Valle de la Muerte (New Valley of Death). After returning from their journey they made a report which recommended that Mission San Luis Rey be established at this site to serve as a center for Hispanic settlers who would cross into Arizona Territory after arriving there through Mexicali port. In 1865–66Mexican American José Joaquin Rios organized a group of 700 men under his command and Flores y Zamora donated 640 acres (24 km2) along with some adobe buildings to help build Mission San Luis Rey. This mission was dedicated on November 6, 1865 by Governor Manuel Micheltorena during his visit to Baja California; it served as both an élite school run by Jesuits and a social service center providing food for Indians working on Missions Santa Ana de Atascadero and Loreto across the border in Chihuahua state. On May 3rd 1870 Juan Pablo Garza married Doña Juana Margarita Molina at Calle Real near present-day Avenida Páez Zaldívar south of downtown Calexico. Margarita was from Zacatecas; her father had married José Fernando De la Peña y Costilla before he moved with his family to Tucson in 1853.
