Ceres is a small, sleepy town in the Mojave Desert of California. It was first settled bypainted men who came to the area in 1849 as part of the Gold Rush. The town became an important transportation hub during the late 1800s and early 1900s because it was located close to both Los Angeles and San Francisco. Ceres also developed into a center for agriculture, with many large ranches and plantations being located there. However, today Ceres is largely a ghost town, with only a few hundred residents living there. The town was founded on April 24th, 1849 by eleven men from Oregon who were looking for new land to explore after completing their survey of the region. The men named their settlement Ceres because they found that the name of one of their native towns in Oregon had already been given to another community in California: Santa Clara de la Sierra. After surveying the area for some time, the group decided that they would not attempt to build a city but rather establish themselves along two main routes connecting these two major cities: One route would go through Sacramento and then head east towards Nevada; while the other route would go through Las Vegas and head south towards Tucson before turning west towards Riverside County. The first settlers arrived at Ceres on horseback on April 24th and soon started building their homes using adobe bricks which they had brought over from Oregon. They later built more permanent structures using lumber cut from local oak trees. By early summer 1850, most of the original settlers had left for various reasons including gold strikes in nearby Butte County or Lompoc due to bad weather conditions or illness among those remaining. Only eight people remained at Ceres when hostilities began between American Indians known as Paiutes and Spanish settlers known as Californios on October 2nd, 1850. For three weeks until November 3rd, 1850 there was constant fighting between these groups which led to numerous injuries and fatalities among both sides including six Americans killed outright as well as thirteen Californios killed or wounded (including nine members of government). After three months of warfarering little progress had been made so Lt Colonel John Cushing ordered his forces back upstream where he established Fort Yuma on December 15th following successful negotiation with several chiefs who offered military support against any further Indian attacks within Arizona Territory (now comprising much of modern-day Nevada). In total around 250 European soldiers were garrisoned at Yuma including seventy-eight British officers under General James Hoolihan who acted as commander-in-chief for all southern Arizona Territory during this time period according to contemporary sources although no records exist indicating such an appointment actually happened。 On January 8th 1861 California statehood was granted making Ceres part of what is now Orange County; however despite this grant it never regained its importance within upstate California society due largely to lack Of development opportunities outside Mono Valley whereas larger towns like Los Angeles grew rapidly throughout this period.–[Source: http://www4shared .com/doc/abcd3ddc9/ceres_california_history_paper]
