Ceres, California is a small town in Kern County, California. The population was 1,711 at the 2010 census. Ceres is located on State Route 99 between Bakersfield and Salinas. The community was founded in 1897 by residents of nearby Hanford City who were displaced when the Hanford Arsenal was closed. The area around Ceres has been inhabited by the Mono people for over 10,000 years. When gold was discovered in 1848 in Northern California, miners began to rush to the area looking for ore. In 1853, an ad for land near Ceres attracted prospectors from Los Angeles County. By 1865, a post office had been established at Ceres with James Folsom as first US Postmaster General. A train station was built on the same site in 1903 and continued to serve passengers until 1957 when it became automated. In 1907, construction began on what would become the largest water storage facility in Southern California when two rights-of-way were acquired from local farmers and developers to create a system of reservoirs that would supply water for Municipal Utilities District (MUD) operations throughout Kern County and parts of Riverside County. The original reservoir constructed by MUD is now known as Lake Oroville and covers an area of . It eventually served as both an overflow reservoir during drought years and as a source of drinking water for many communities in Kern County including Ceres andHanford City before its replacement by Lake Oroville occurred in 1928 duplicate with an additional storage capacity after some sanitary problems with its predecessor led to public criticism which led to improvement works being undertaken immediately prior to its opening date; these included installation of underground piping systems connecting all three reservoirs together so that stormwater could be routed away from single points where it might have caused flooding during heavy rains; also new facilities were erected upstream of the old dam so that more efficient use could be made of available surface water resources which had been used mainly for irrigation purposes up until then; finally ice cream production became popular among locals because farmers couldnow take advantage of winter sunshine instead of having to deal with darkness during summer months The operation of MUD brought about increased development adjacent to downtown but also resulted in increased traffic congestion on State Route 99 due eastbound flow into downtowninducedbyramificationsofthe routingoftheyouth Rd through residential areas adjoining state routes northandsouth astheylivedofferedanimprobableescape routetowithoutdamageinthedowntownarea # Lake Oroville Dam: History & Functioning
