It became part of M&I National Bank before being sold off again in 2007 to become Chulasierra Credit Union which continues operations today with over 1 million members across Northern California On July 4th 1862 , eleven Californios (Californians who had fought for Mexico against American forces) including José Moreno y Costilla arrived at Punta Del Este on horseback from Baja California Sur under cover of darkness just three days after General Antonio López de Santa Anna surrendered at Pasig River Bridge near Santiago del Estero
The area now known as Chula Vista was first inhabited by the Tongva people. They lived in villages near the mouth of the San Gabriel River. In 1821, Mission San Diego de Alcala was founded and the Tongva were forced to leave their homes. The mission became a Catholic church and the town began to grow. In 1845, Mexican nationals arrived in California and began to settle in what is now Chula Vista. They built missions and farms along the riverbanks. The town grew quickly, becoming a major commercial center for southern California. In 1853, there was an gold strike in nearby Isleton and Chula Vista became one of the leading towns in that region. Chula Vista's growth stopped when World War II started. The town contracted rapidly during wartime because so many soldiers moved into Southern California to fight for Nazi Germany or Japan. Many of Chulasvista's residents were drafted into military service and few returned home after the war ended. The post-war years were difficult for Chula Vista; it lost its status as a major commercial center and its population decreased significantly. However, it experienced some resurgence during 2000s as new businesses opened up and old ones reopened after being closed down for various reasons such as bankruptcy or environmental damage.
