In recent years there has been a trend of development around Coalinga with new housing developments (such as projects by Lennar Homes) and businesses opening up throughout town including several restaurants and small grocery stores that have helped make life more comfortable within these limits while still allowing easy access to shopping centers located just outside town Limits

A mission built there in 1768 by Franciscans named Santa Clara became an important religious center for settlers in what is now California. In 1821, General Mariano Cárdenas founded the independent Mexican state of Alta California on land then part of Sonoma County west of Coalinga Creek. The town of Coalinga grew up around the mission and ranching base until it was destroyed by fire in 1886. The town was re-established as an agricultural community with a post office and school in 1907. The population peaked at about 1,500 during World War II but declined rapidly afterwards due to military service and other economic activities. The last resident died in 1984.
