Compton is a city in Inland Empire, California, United States. It was founded by Mexican Americans in 1881. Compton became an Anglo-American community and the seat of government for Inland Empire County until it incorporated as a city in 1917. The population of Compton was 116,823 at the 2010 census. Compton is located on the eastern edge of Los Angeles County and straddles the border between San Bernardino and Riverside Counties. The 2015 estimated population of downtown Compton was just over 100,000 people while adjacent unincorporated areas had populations of around 30,000 to 50,000 residents. The first permanent settler in what would become Compton was José María Ortiz who established a rancho east of present day Pasadena on May 10th 1881. He named his land "Montezuma" after Mexico's most powerful emperor at that time: Maximiliano de Alcalá y Agustín de la Huerta y Cámpora (1822-1898). Ortiz brought with him many Mexicans who worked on his new rancho including 16 year old Manuel Sánchez who became one of Compton's earliest citizens; Sánchez later served as Mayor of Westwood from 1955 to 1959 . On December 15th 1882 Juan Bautista Concepción sold 3170 acres near present day Monrovia to Lorenzo Pico for $3 horse troughs worth $10 each plus interest which made up $36 total cost. This early land purchase marked Ventura County's first recorded sale! At this time there were only 300 residents living within what would become Los Angeles County limits! However due to poor soil quality and lack of water resources all these settlers were forced out by 1883 when the Santa Ana River was discovered rich with gold ready to be mined! The next years saw some heavy investment into land throughout Southern California resulting in several large grants being offered for Ranchos Rodeo much like those given earlier for Rancho Montezuma but no one took advantage because gold had not yet been discovered! A few notable investors during this time include John Leland Stanford Jr., Sam Gould and George Hearst III – all men highly respected members of their respective industries - who formed a consortium known as The Four Horsemen To obtain control over larger blocks of acreage surrounding Hollywood which they thought could provide them with reliable transportation links across LA county should real estate prices ever start rising again outside their already well endowed properties! By 1888 almost 400 Mexican American families had settled within what came to be called "The City Of Angels". However due primarily to political instability caused by competing claims from East Coast oil interests along with social unrestrained cantankerousness shown by many newly arrived immigrants more than anything else shortsighted business ventures quickly led to widespread decay including robbery, carousing and general lawlessness becoming so rampant that it soon attracted attention from both the LAPD (Los Angeles Police Department) and federal agents known as 'Gangsters' or 'Racketeers'. Today many refer nostalgically to this period as "The Ghetto Years." As early as 1889 gangs began making themselves at home among local Mexican American youth engaging in such activities as prostitution, street brawling and other criminal activity that helped give birth later that decade à la New York's Lower East Side; however gang violence generally did not gain international renown until much later during prohibition when organized crime groups such as LaFace emerged powerful enough politically/ economically speaking To rival even Big Tobacco’s monopoly powers across America’s largest city centers ." Compton, California is a city located in Inland Empire County, California, United States. The population was 54,651 at the 2010 census. It is the largest city in San Bernardino County and the 5th-largest city in Orange County. Compton's history dates back to 1871 when it was named after Capt. John S. Compton of the U.S. Volunteers who had fought in the Mexican–American War. The first post office for Compton opened on November 1, 1871. The name of the town changed from Winchester to Compton on October 9, 1903 due to objections from neighboring Riverside about using an abbreviation for "Riverside." On January 17, 1907, all but 4 of Pomona's 22 cities joined forces with Compton to form what would become known as the Pomona-San Bernardino Metropolitan Statistical Area (MSA). On December 15 of that year, however, all 23 cities left Pomona-San Bernardino because they objected to being merged into a single MSA with no say over its own policies or boundaries. Compton has experienced significant growth since its incorporation as a city in 1907 and now has a population of over 60,000 residents within its limits! Its economy is based primarily on service industries such as health care and education; however there are also many businesses clustered around downtown which continue to thrive thanks to their dedicated employees and supportive community! In addition to its vibrant downtown district full of music venues and nightlife options as well as world-renowned schools like Claremont McKenna College and University Park High School (both private),employment opportunities abound throughout this dynamic city!
On October 15, 1847, the first post office in Compton was established. The town was named for General William Sherman, who had won a victory over the Mexican army at the Battle of Palo Alto on September 12 of that year.
