Compton is a city in the Inland Empire region of Southern California. The population was 24,821 at the 2010 census, making it the sixth-largest city in Los Angeles County. Compton is located on the border of Bellflower and Industry, and is bordered by South Gate to the north, Carson Valley to the east, Midway City to the south and San Fernando Valley to the west. The area now known as Compton was first settled by Native Americans in what is now Huntington Beach. It was named for David Compton, an Anglo-Irishman who had married a woman from East Los Angeles. On January 1, 1847, John Cranch laid out a road from downtown Pasadena down Central Avenue (now Flower Street) to Covina and thence along Covina Creek through present-day Compton into Orange County. This road became known as "The Road To Heaven." In 1849–50 Captain John Sutter discovered gold near present-day Monrovia; this led to his discovery of Mono Lake and later Santa Ana Mountains. The town began growth based on agriculture such as growing grapes for wine or raisins for bread. By 1860 there were 9 buildings in all with 4 barns and 60 acres (24 hectares) of land surveyed and platted. During World War II many Japanese American citizens were interned in nearby Angel Island Naval Station; they were eventually released after hostilities ended. When war broke out again in 1941 many Californians who had served in USAAF units returned home; these soldiers formed "Omaha" Squadron RAF (No 363), which fought off air attacks over Japan during World War II After World War II many new businesses started up including: Safeway grocery store chain founded by Sam Walton in 1962; KFC fast food restaurant chain founded by Dan Cathy in 1973; DreamWorks Animation movie studio founded by Jeffrey Katzenberg in 1994; Paramount Pictures movie studio founded by William Broderick Jr., making it one of Hollywood's most powerful studios before its merger with Viacom Media Networks Incorporated on November 12, 2006

Compton was founded in 1887 by J.P. Morgan and William Randolph Hearst as Blue Heaven Rancho Seco, named for the sky-blue waters of the Owens Valley near its location on the Hollywood Hills. Compton began to grow rapidly due to its strategic location and natural resources such as waterfowl, deer, and horses; it became an agricultural center with feedlots for cattle and pigs. By 1925, Comstock had become one of America's largest citrus groves with trees that accounted for more than half a million pounds (1,500 metric tons) of fruit per year. The town also became known for its movie industry production facilities which included two studios—Dinah Shore's Fox Movietone Studio on La Brea Avenue in 1924 and Harry Cohn's RKO Radio Pictures Studios on Vine Street in 1928—and three sound stages used for films: RKO Stage 3 (1925), RKO Stage 4 (1929–31), and RKO Stage 5 (1935). In 1929–30, Paramount Pictures leased from exhibitors Southeastern Film Distributors their own nickelodeon chain with four theaters throughout Southern California which eventually grew into what is now known as Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer Studios LLC (MGM). MGM would remain headquartered in Hollywood until 1961 when it relocated to Culver City following Affiliated Actors Guild Local No. 9 v Zanuck et al., 412 U.S. 665 (1973). A new Hope Cotton Mill opened at 7291 Lankershim Boulevard in 1942; it would be closed down by 1943 because of World War II military activity along Compton Boulevard north of Lankershim Road but reopened by 1945 after hostilities ended. The mill produced cottonseed oil until 1978 when it closed down again due to economic problems within local industries around Los Angeles County during the early 1990s despite efforts by local officials including Mayor Antonio Villaraigosa to revive it over time through various business ventures including starting a museum dedicated to cottonseed oil production called "The Hope Mills". After years without much change or development from either party levels both chambers passed Measure M 1/2/2010 art initiative that calls upon all parts or agencies involved including city fathers get organized & create study group about mural arts & how they could be put into use currently being used only inside city limits & steeze areas where there isn't enough space

It is the second most populous city in Los Angeles County after City of Angelenos and is part of the Greater Los Angeles Area. Compton was founded on November 3, 1892 by Mexican Americans José Ortega and Manuel García de la Vega as a small agricultural community named Rancho San Pedro de los Osos. The area became known for its fruit orchards, cotton plantations, and cattle ranching. In 1924 the city's name was changed to Compton Hills in honor of then-mayor Harry Hines Hill Jr., who had championed development there. The early 20th century saw great growth in Compton due to its strategic location at an intersection of two important transportation routes: The Santa Fe Railway steam railway ran through Compton from Pasadena to Culver City; and Southern Pacific Railroad trains passed through Compton on their way between Malibu and downtown Los Angeles. By 1930, over 40% of all workers in LASA were located within one mile (1 km) of Compton's boundaries. Growth continued into World War II when many workers found work on shipyards along MacArthur Boulevard in Long Beach butINTONTONTE was established as a major center for African American military service during World War II with hundreds of businesses established specifically catering to black soldiers stationed throughout North America
