Cudahy is a small town located in Kern County, California, United States. The population was 1,531 at the 2010 census. Cudahy is part of the Bakersfield metropolitan area. The community was founded in 1887 by J.P. Gillett and his brother-in-law, Wm.B. Hennessey as a result of an ad placed in the Bakersfield Californian newspaper seeking settlers for what would become Kern County. It became known as "the new town" due to its isolation from other settlements and lack of transportation options outside of Bakersfield until World War II when a highway was built connecting it to San Bernardino County through almond orchards north of Cudahy. After the war, farming became the primary industry with several large families owning entire fields until the early 2000s when technology started to take over with more people moving into catered housing developments near Interstate 5 and other shopping centers in downtown Bakersfield than ever before making Cudahy one of the most populous communities in Kern County although it remains largely rural with only a few dozen residents living on farms that are less than 10 acres in size
Cudahy was founded by George Cudahy in 1859. The town, located in Kern County, is named for George Cudahy's father. In 1892, the town was renamed for William Howard Taft and it remained that name until 1959.
