The first European settlers arrived in 1821 and named it Rancho El Centro after their centennial celebration on October 6th. In 1828, José Castro founded the town of La Jolla on what are now two blocks of Commercial Street east of Sixth Avenue and about one-third mile north of present-day Market Street. In 1857, Mission San Carlos Borromeo was founded by Franciscan missionaries who had come from Mexico City. The mission became a parish church in 1859 and was known as Mission San Carlos de Alcántara until 1863 when it became Santa Ana del Vallarta y Alcántara due to its proximity to Alcántara Naval Ammunition Depot which had been established at that site in 1850. In 1896 an Act of Congress changed the name to El Centro because it was deemed the most important center for agricultural production in Southern California. The citypostal service began operation on December 1st, 1911 with office buildings at Third and I Streets and First Avenue North; today there are only traces remaining from those days including a block off Broadway between First and Second Avenues which served as the original post office building’s parking lot. A new post office building was built at Seventh Avenue West near current day National University Boulevard in 1928 but this structure too failed to survive the 1960s tornado damage

El Centro, California is a city in San Diego County, California. As of the 2010 census, the population was 97,971. El Centro is located on the town square of San Diego and is bounded by Interstate 15 to the east, I-5 to the south, and Park Boulevard to the west. The city was founded in 1869 as a small settlement called "Nacogdoches" on Rancho El Centro Viejo near present day Escondido. It became an incorporated city in 1903. The City of El Centro was established on December 12th 1870 when pioneers Captains John Sutter and George Hill set out from Monterey Bay with their family petsleds to found what would become known as “The City of El Centro” on Rancho Los Alamos (now part of Imperial Valley). Captain Sutter purchased 640 acres (253 hectares) north of where today's downtown El Centro stands from Don José de Alvarado who had purchased it from Juan Bautista Enciso y Bejarano back in 1775 for $8 per acre ($2 million today). Captain Sutter named his new hometown after General Antonio Lopez de Santa Anna who had been captured at Monterrey during the Mexican–American War and imprisoned at Presidio La Bahia because Mexico refused to free him until he accepted an indemnity payment from Spain totaling $220 million (equivalent to $6 billion today). Legend has it that General Santa Anna requested that his Christian name be changed so that he may not be confused with Wasco lieutenant Arturo Lopez de Santa Ana whose forces raided Pueblo del Oro just outside modern day Nacogdoches four days earlier. In honor of General Lopez de Santa Anna’s request, Captain Sutter renamed his new community “El Paso del Norte” but soon discovered that many people did not know this story Veterans Day parade route which ran down Sixth Avenue between Veteran’s Memorial Monument and Gadsden Street thence up Gadsden Street past Business Men’s Club before concluding at Humanitarian Aid Society building next door (now First Presbyterian Church), thence along Third Avenue past Mission Chapel and Federal Building before finally returning home via Broadway running between Navy Yard and old US Army Ammunition Depot prior to crossing I-15 at Exit 213A which served as our first stoplight! In 1872 began construction of what would become known as The County Courthouse which still stands today across Main Street from The Salvation Army complex off I-15 South Gate Drive. This important structure served as both courthouse for San Diego County and government center for all residents within its boundaries until 1915 when county seat move eastward to San Bernardino County pursuant to statehood legislation. The Courthouse Annex buildings now house several different agencies including Adult Education Services Department; Sheriff’s Department; Fire Dept.; Central Library; Health Department; School District No. 2; water main replacement project; etc… On May 10th 1876 a large fire burned throughout downtown resulting in extensive damage including most notable loss or destruction of streetlights & businesses…. On January 20th 1890 Mayor Leland Hayward delivered Address before Citizens assembled InOld Court House To Ratify Constitutionality Of Municipal Charter That WouldgiveCity RightsTo Existing Businesses AndResidents….. In the early 1800s, El Centro was a small town in present-day California. It was founded in 1797 by Juan Borja and his brother Alonso. The first post office in El Centro was established on December 1, 1814. A flour mill was built by John Hogg in 1820. In 1865, the Central Pacific Railroad arrived in El Centro and began passenger service; it became a main route for travelers between Sacramento and San Francisco. By 1903, the town had grown to around 10,000 residents. During World War II, El Centro played an important role as a munitions production center; during the war it produced more than 25% of America's total military ammunition output. The post office closed on July 26, 1963 due to high postage rates; at that time,El Centro had a population of only 615 people. However, the community continued to exist through various incarnations until its destruction by fire on October 15th of that year. The ashes of what is left of El Centro are now located just north of downtown Sacramento along I-5 (exit 169).
