Frémont in 1847, and became a part of the new California Territory after it was acquired from Mexico in 1850. The first post office was established at Fairfield in 1852, and the town had a population of about 100 people by 1870. In 1907, Fairfield incorporated as a city. It has since grown to over 250 people, with a significant economic base in agriculture and manufacturing.
