Fortuna, California is the most known municipality in the state of California. The town was founded by Nicholas Fortunato on May 25th, 1875 and it has since become a major center for agriculture and industry. Fortuna is a small city in Inyo County, California, United States. The population was 2,715 at the 2010 census. It is located on the eastern edge of the San Gabriel Valley and is surrounded by chaparral and mountains. The first people to arrive in what is now Fortuna were Mono Indians who hunted big game in the area. A band of Missionaries named Francisco Lopez founded Rancho Santa Anita in 1827. Over time, ranch hands acquired land and populated the area with Anglo settlers. In 1892, when oil was discovered along Interstate 10 near present-day Los Angeles County, businesses sprang up around the new discovery; Fortuna became one of these businesses. By 1910, oil production had brought increased wealth to the townspeople and they began to build frame buildings for their own use as well as houses for workers at nearby refineries and other companies. During World War I, locals served in various military units including Infantry Company G (1916), Coast Artillery Battalion E (1917), First Marine Division (1918) and Owney Madden's Raiders (1920). Many residents also invested capital into local businesses that profited from wartime business activity such as munitions plants and shipyards. With growth came pollution and consequent health concerns; however, many residents continue to live close to industry because it provides jobs or access to quality public education opportunities which have helped keep their communities healthy throughout periods of economic recession or decline. According to The Daily Review newspaper’s 2014 report on “The Greatest American Cities” Fortuna ranked third behind Bostonia(New York City)and Oakland(California). This ranking reflects both its size—the city has over two million people—as well as its ability to attract employers from all types of industries outside its boundaries who share a commitment not only to providing good living conditions but also environmental stewardship: clean air/water/land ratios are among highest in California
