Foster City is a city located in San Francisco County, California, United States. As of the 2010 census, the population was 79,651. The city's name is derived from John Foster who purchased land here in 1849. The original town site was on Holmby Hills Road and it included a number of small businesses and residences before the construction of Interstate 280 made it ineligible for town status. In 1928, the city developed an ordinance which prohibited handguns without a permit from being carried in any public place within its limits. This ordinance was repealed in 1984 but re-enacted as part of Proposition 218 whichJJ Fenton co-sponsored with then Mayor Dianne Feinstein. The current mayor is Ed Lee. The first gun store in Foster City opened its doors on December 15th, 1869 by Wm Auld and Bros., located at Fourth and Harrison Streets. At that time there were only sixgun shops existing in America and this store represented perhaps one percent of all gun sales nationwide at that time. Foster City began to grow rapidly after incorporation as a city on April 14th, 1914 when the old Post Office vacated their building at Second and Market Streets and moved into their new facility at Tenth Street and Hill Avenue (now West First Street). During World War II Foster City became an important munitions production center due to its location two miles north of Candlestick Park on Candlestick Boulevard between Third Street and Harrison Boulevard (now First Street) where Arsenal Ammunition Plant operated until 1976; also nearby was Allied Signal Corporation’s Hunt Research Laboratories which produced radar equipment during World War II for Japan’s military intelligence service IJA(K). After 1945 Foster City saw mixed economic development with many warehouses becoming residential properties until gradual demolition beginning in the early 2000s resulting in a net loss of over 100 acres downtown since 1918 when downtown business district boundaries changed subsequent to annexation by other cities includingSan Francisco . On July 1st 1978 martial law was declared following again large demonstrations against police brutality taking place throughout much of Northern California following last year’s San Bernardino shootings involving Muslim Americans living near Los Angeles International Airport; martial law continued until September 17th when Governor Ronald Reagan signed Executive Order 12591 proclaiming that “the authority vested herein by law shall not be used to restrict or impinge upon civil rights or constitutional liberties exercised by citizens thereof without just cause” However some restrictions such as banning automobiles from Downtown remained into effect while officials struggled unsuccessfully to resolve ongoing community wide protests dubbed “theoccupation” Despite these attempts efforts violent demonstrations continued intermittently through October 1977 despite prior assurances by local leaders that those arrested would be released without charges pending further inquiry into what happened during those days leading up to November 7th In November 1977 over 50 people were arrested after several hours long occupation outside Balboa Park Recreation Center resulting in more than $1 million dollars worth of property damage The final straw came when Mayor Dianne Feinstein ordered park employees not to allow demonstrators onto Mallards Pond beach Fronting Civic Center for peaceful behavior ensuing violence which left three people dead although no arrests were made On January 8th 1978 Reed Erickson announced his candidacy for Mayor against incumbent Dianne Feinstein setting off another round of community wide protests lasting through February 2nd 1978 With few if any immediate solutions forthcoming most residents turned inward looking for ways feudal systems like patronage networks could be reformed rather then struggling trying solve complex problems facing their community including high crime rates resultant poor economy Although polls showed Reed winning handily he lost endorsement from majority Democratic Party leader Jerry Brown who instead endorsed newly elected Supervisor Gavin Newsom whose promise to endear himself to the community led Newsom to seek municipal office against former Supervisor Bob Filner challenging him successfully In March 2018 Reed Erickson announced his candidacy once again seeking election against incumbent Dianne Feinstein This time running as an independent candidate

In 1865, a group of Englishmen who had moved to Northern California decided to set up a new town on an adjacent site. They named their town Foster City in honor of Sir John Foster who had helped found Rancho del Norte in 1846. After some missionary work by the Episcopal Church, which erected a mission here in 1868, Foster City became affiliated with Mission San José de la Concepción on September 15th, 1872. The first post office opened in 1870 as part of Contra Costa County and was located at 707 Market Street. In 1875–76, the United States Post Office Department opened an office here under charter from King George III of England. At that time it served both local residents and those living near Alameda and Berkeley counties to the south and east respectively In 1904-1905 construction began on what would become San Francisco's only high-rise wooden tower building - One Market Street The Ridgefield School District built three schools (grades K-6) around 1925: Ridgefield Elementary (now known as Orchard View Elementary), Ridgefield Middle/High School (now known as Stevenson Middle/High School), and Ridgefield Senior High School (now known as Geary High). A fourth school - Valley Glen Intermediate - was built nearby but did not open until 1928 A series of fires destroyed large parts of downtown Foster City during 1933-34 called "the Great Fire".
