Fountain Valley, California is a city in San Bernardino County, California. The population was 21,711 at the 2010 census. It is located in the eastern side of the county on Interstate 5 and east of downtown Los Angeles. In 1892, two brothers by the name of John and Jesse Winchester opened a shooting academy in Fountain Valley on North Avenue. Their academy became known as "The School of Gunnery" and taught young men how to shoot handguns and rifles. In 1907, The School of Gunnery merged with The National Shooting Association (NSA) to form what would become NRA America. When NRA America merged with other organizations in 1959, it assumed the name National Rifle Association (NRA). In 1964, NRA began offering hearing protection products through its firearms dealers throughout the United States. Fountain Valley, California is a town in San Bernardino County, California, United States. The population was 24,878 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Riverside-San Bernardino-Ontario Metropolitan Statistical Area. Fountain Valley is located in the eastern half of Riverside County and lies east of Interstate 10 and south of Interstate 15. The nickname "The Apple Capital" may be due to its location near Orangetown and Fontana, bothApple orchard towns which were once part of Fountain Valley but have since moved away. Other nicknames include "The Garden City", "TheVillage", "Palo Alto" or simply "Valley". Fountain Valley was first settled in 1876 by brothers George Washington Dixon and John Witherspoon Dixon who named it after their father's home state of Virginia, Virginia being then territory of California. In 1888 they brought over a group of Mormon settlers from Salt Lake City and founded the Townsite Association which included many small communities including Fillmore (1889), Chino Hills (1892), Porterville (1898), Simi Valley (March 1899) and Carlsbad Caverns (October 1901). In 1912 two brothers founded what became known as The Ford Motor Company which had its roots in wagonmaking but soon diversified into other areas such as agricultural production, oil exploration, real estate development and manufacturing including armored cars for World War I. The town absorbed much of neighbouring Fillmore during this time with most residents moving out except for a few families who continued to live in town until well into the 1970s when an extensive tearing down of older buildings began that eventually left the only evidence remaining today are some foundations dating back to 1916-1917

The population was 41,859 as of 2010. Fountain Valley owes its name to nearby Fountain Creek, which empties into Santa Monica Bay. The creek has been providing water for irrigation since 1848. In 1870, a mill was built in Fountain Valley by J.P. Morgan and Company; it continued to be used until 1907. In 1912, William Randolph Hearst founded Universal Pictures here with his brother John Gilbert Hearst Sr.; Fountain Valley became one of the company's main production areas.
Fountain Valley was founded in 1887 by George W. Fountain and his wife, Emma. The town was initially named Soda Springs after the springs that were located near it. In 1888, the town changed its name to Fountain Valley because of the abundance of fountains in the area. The first post office opened in 1889 and continued to be called Soda Springs until 1912. The first store in Fountain Valley was called the Silver Spring Store and it opened in 1890. In 1903, a new store named the Gold Star Store was opened and it remained open until 1959. The population of Fountain Valley grew from about 100 people in 1890 to more than 4,000 people by 1910. However, during World War I, the population decreased due to lack of military recruits and also because many residents left for other parts of California. During World War II, the population increased again due to enlistments into the military and also because of an increase in oil production within nearby Kern County which led to new development around Fountain Valley including Petrolia and City Heights. After World War II ended, the population decreased again due to retirements as well as some changes at state government with passage of Proposition 64 which made local governments independent from state government control. As a result of these changes, Fountain Valley experienced a decrease in population over time although there has been occasional growth since then on occasion when initiatives have been passed by city officials or when jobs have arisen within specific sectors such as tech startups or online retailing
