Fullerton, California is an unincorporated community in Orange County, California. The population was 44,580 at the 2010 census. It is located on the eastern edge of Los Angeles County and is bordered by Walnut Creek to the east, Anaheim Hills to the north, Glendale to the northwest, and Fullerton City to the south. The first Europeans to visit what is now Fullerton were Juan Rodríguez Cabrillo and his crew of ships sailing from Mexico City on October 20th 1542. They sighted a large island off shore and named it San Miguel because that's where they found it when they landed. A later expedition under Gaspar de Portolà sailed upvcn coast in 1769 and named several places after Spanish saints- Santa Barbara,liguero (now Crescent Heights), Alcala (Alameda), y Mission Viejo (Mission Viejo). Another group led by José Maria Velasco explored this area in 1824 while seeking possible sources of water for El Dorado Expedition. In 1848 Antonio Quintero founded a ranch called Rancho Rey del Cielo about 12 miles due west of present day Fullerton.. In 1850 Elisha Rockefeller bought part of Rancho Rey del Cielo and established what would become Western Electric Company before moving his operations eastward in 1906. On July 16th 1888 fullerton city was incorporated with land from nearby Newport Beach as well as parts of Huntington Beach and Signal Hill which had been annexed into Irvine county two years earlier. That same year another town - Union City - was established about 2 miles due south of present-day Fullerton on new land acquired from property owner John Waddell Laird who had moved there from Ontario Township, Illinois some time previous. Union City's incorporation created a rivalry between Fullerton and Union City which continued until 1923 when both towns were merged into one municipality known today as Fullerton city. In 1954Fullerton became one of six cities chosen for membership in the newly formed "City of Angels" metropolitan area consisting only of Los Angeles County proper without any other counties or cities within its boundaries.. On January 1st 1957 all full service commercial businesses within city limits were turned over to a new government entity known then as "The Cities Corporation". This organization operated full service businesses until 1991 when it merged with local non-profit services organization Pacific Humanitarian Services Incorporated to form Downtown Pacific Foundation Inc.. In 1992 Downtown Pacific Foundation Incorporated again as Southern California Regional Civic Center Authority Limited Liability company making downtown FULLERTON their corporate headquarters.. On May 19th 2002 downtown FULLERTON officially became an independently run city once again following a referendum held by residents rejecting annexation into neighboring Irvine county.. TodayFullerton has active cultural outputs including three performing arts venues including The Hollywood Bowl which stages popular theater productions such as 'The Sunshine Boys'and 'A Funny Thing Happened on the Wayto School House'; multiple art galleries including OCAD University’s Gallery at HarborCenter; numerous restaurants including The Grill at Farmers Market Place; four parks totaling over 400 acres; five libraries including OCPL’s Library at Main Street & HarborCenter; support agencies such as Habitat for Humanity; more than 100 small business owners/ownership groups working directly with government entities throughout CA.; more than 350 employees servicing nearly 600 public sector organizations statewide through contracts awarded through competitive bidding procedures administered by Sanity Bidding LLP.. Although geographically proximate to Anaheim Hills and Glendale he remains unofficially associated with either city although he may sometimes be seen walking or driving around their neighborhoods...the vast majority his activities take place within HISPANIC CONTEXT inside CITY OF FULLERTON itself............fullerton enjoys strong international connections through cooperation with various agencies involved in socio- Cultural Programs across many languages....... Today much work continues behind closed doors involving planning for future growth outside CITY OF FULLERTON ..... [Fullerton] will continue growing but will always operatewithin its own unique confines......... As one resident put it ". . . We are not just citizens here but residents who have taken our culture [of LA]and put it back together."

The first people to arrive in what is now Fullerton were the Tongva people, who called it Xicali or "the landing place". The Tongva had been living on the coast of Southern California for centuries before they started to move inland. In 1821, full-time Mission San Gabriel missionaries founded Mission San Bernardino de Anza here; this mission remains an important pilgrimage site today. The town began as a tiny agricultural settlement named Rancho Santa Ana del Oro, about four miles (6 km) east of today's downtown Fullerton. Because there was no water available to drink from any of the numerous hills that surrounded it, farmers developed irrigation systems by pumping groundwater from wells. By 1871, Rancho Santa Ana del Oro had become an incorporated town with a population of over 100 men and women. In 1887 Ventura County was formed from part of Alameda County and Fullerton became one of its first townships; Ventura would eventually merge into Los Angeles County as well. The name "Fullerton" may be derived from Paloma Creek which ran through the community and emptied into Pacific Ocean near present day Irvine beach; residents often refer to their town as "the ocean side". In 1915 Anaheim Hills was annexed into Fullerton and also became part of Los Angeles County. At that time, all but 6 percent of Fullerton's land area consisted only of open fields suitable for farming or grazing animals rather than built up areas with industry or commerce - much like later suburban communities such as Riverside and Torrance along Interstate 5%. In 1940 during World War II Fullerton became an airfield used by B-29 Superfortresses flying out of John F Kennedy International Airport in Hollywood; after the war it reverted back to farmland until development began around it beginning in the early 1960s. In 1984 Guggenheim Memorial Museum moved from Pasadena to adjacent Agoura Hills - makingFullerstononeofthelastmajormuseumstoleavePasadenaforAngelsandAirportswhenitbecameaMetro Areain 1997). In 1990 City Council voted unanimously to annex Unincorporated portions of Diamond Bar which bordered Anaheim Hills southward on North Park Avenue while unincorporated lands extending northward along La Cienega Boulevard were annexed by Crescent Heights (northwest corner lot line between North Park Avenue and La Cienega Boulevard).
