He named it after his father-in-law Francisco Nieto who had owned part of Rancho Santa Clara del Nuevo Mexico. When Nieto died in 1901, his son Manuel Jr., took over management of the town. The town grew rapidly during its earliest years and by 1912 there were over 100 people living in it. During World War II, much of Gilroy was destroyed by bombing raids from Japan because of its importance as a military airfield used by both USA and Imperial Japan alike during their war efforts against each other .
