Gun targets have a long and distinguished history in Goleta, California. The first target shooting contest was held on May 4, 1875 at the Park Place Grounds. The American Rifle Association (ARA) organized the competition which attracted shooters from all over the United States. The park place grounds served as Goleta's handgun range until 1907 when it was moved to the current location of City Hall lawn. From 1907-1974, public gun ranges were located at various locations in Goleta including City Hall Lawn, Hollywood Bowl, and University Park. From 1974-1994, GOALTARG operated as Goleta's only municipally ownedgun range. During this time GOALTARG hosted an annual convention that included NRA members from all over the US as well as local vendors of firearms products and services. In 1994 GOALTARG reverted back to municipally owned status with the goal of preserving its unique character and outdoor landscape for future generations of shooters. Since reversion to municipally owned status GUNTARGETS has conducted several targeted events annually on different dates throughout October - November inclusive which attracts amateur and professional shooters from around the state of California along with their spouses/partners/children/grandkids!

The town is located in the Kern County seat of Bakersfield. The first humans to live in Goleta were the Chumash people who arrived in 1769 from Santa Cruz Island. The first permanent white settlement was established by George Hearst in 1873 when he bought land near what is now downtown Goleta from the Pueblo Indians. After Hearst's death, his son and successor, David Mathers, developed the area into what it is today with assistance from the government. Today, Goleta is known for its art scene which includes many galleries and museums as well as its annual wine festival which draws over 1 million visitors annually. The town also features a symphony orchestra and a variety of cultural events throughout the year.

Goleta is a town in Kern County, California, United States. The population was 25,464 as of the 2010 census. Goleta is located on the north bank of the Sacramento River, about 15 miles east of downtown Sacramento. The name "Golula" may be derived from Spanish meaning "gravel place". Golula had been in use for some time before 1850 when it was given to Rancho San Miguel del Goleta by Mexican Captain José Joaquín Cárdenas. Goleta Creek was named after Commodore John D. Stockton's flagship at that time, HMS Beagle. In 1848 Antonio Lizarro surveyed and laid out a townsite called Arroyo Seco which became Goleta later that year. In 1868, gold was discovered at Sutter's Mill and quickly became an important center for mining operations in Kern County because of its location on the gold-bearing soil near Sutter's Mill and other nearby hills rich in silver and gold ore. The first post office opened in 1869; Goleta became an incorporated town on February 26th of that year under the name Arroyo Seco. Since early on there have been plans to make Goleta into a larger city with annexed areas such as Carpinteria and Porterville but these proposals were never fully realized due to financial reasons or opposition from local businesses who felt they would lose their market share if Goleta grew too large. In 1951 incorporation of portions of Porterville led to a revolt by most residents over what they saw as invasion by outsiders; this revolt ultimately failed and all but one block ( bounded by First Street & Del Norte Street) remains unincorporated today with only nominal postal services provided through mailboxes set up around Pioneer Park east of I-5 near US 101st St./SR 295). Today much of what once made Upendo an attractive community has been replaced with high tech companies parks etc., making it difficult to determine just how significant early golettan settlement really was
The area of Goleta, California was first settled by the Chumash people in the late 18th century. The first white man to visit Goleta was Captain Gabriel Moraga on January 17, 1824. He and his party were exploring the area for gold when they discovered a small creek that led them down into what is now known as Moraga Gulch. The captain named the stream after him and erected a small cabin there. On July 3, 1827, Major José Joaquín de Arguelles arrived at Goleta with about 140 settlers and set up a fortification in what is now called FortArguelles. He named the fort after José García Arguelles y Menéndez, one of his officers who had fought in Mexico's war of independence against Spain. The first school in Goleta was established in 1828 by Mrs. Maria Luisa Pico with help from Father Francisco Jodorowsky. In 1830, Reverend John Copley began teaching religion at Goleta Academy which remained open until 1862 when it became an all-girls convent
